Daytona Beach, FL – Deputies are combing through a heavily wooded and swampy area for more clues after human remains were discovered near Volusia County Jail.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was notified about the human remains around 12:45 PM Thursday.
VCSO spokesman Gary Davidson says a surveyor doing work near VCJ found the remains, which appear to be part of a human skull.
“The site is on the north side of International Speedway Boulevard, just east of its intersection with Red John Drive,” Davidson added. “The Sheriff’s Office has deployed deputies to the scene to launch a search for additional bones as well as any evidence that could help identify the remains.”
Deputies are expected to continue the grid search until sunset Thursday and then start up again Friday morning.
No other details have been released at this time by VCSO, but Davidson did note that there’s no reason to think at this time that a crime has been committed.
